Through the Eyes of a Child

Lessons in this unit explore the culture of Mexico and Canada using primarily DBAE (Discipline Based Art Education). DBAE is defined as “a systematic approach towards art education as a discipline or course of study (such as mathematics or science). It is widely applicable general art education for all and provides a sequential curriculum.”
Students will focus on six pieces representing each country. Photographs of these pieces are contained in this resource.
The lessons have been designed with specific goals in mind. Students will explain and analyze works of art; respond to works of art; relate works of art from various time periods and cultures to each other; describe how historical and cultural contexts influence works of art; apply artistic elements and technical skills to create, present and/or perform works of art; communicate, verbally and in writing, about one’s own artwork; identify artistic elements and principles; identify personal preferences and their relationship to artistic elements; identify distinguishing features of works of art and their historical and cultural contexts; describe how historical or contemporary events influenced or influence works of art; create, present, or perform a work of art; and communicate using an extended vocabulary related to various art forms.
The lessons are structured for fourth grade; however, they can be adapted for older or younger students.
