From Corn to Tortillas

by

Untitled Page

The tortilla is one of the most popular items in Mexican cuisine and is an important staple in the Mexican diet and culture. This unit of study focuses on the corn tortilla. Corn is an important product of the Mexican agricultural community. It can be made into a pozole and used to make tortillas and tamales. The Tortilla Factory, by Gary Paulsen, illustrates the growth cycle of the corn plant, and the process of making tortillas. It is representative of the Hispanic culture and its people.

This unit is recommended primarily for use in the Early Childhood and Kindergarten classrooms. It can be used in the fall during studies of the harvest or during the planting season in the spring. It is a unit that incorporates many areas of the curriculum — art, science, math, and language. Includes bibliography.

The lessons can be downloaded as a 20-page PDF from this site at the link below.

This unit is one of some three dozen web-based resources recommended by the Florida International University Latin American and Caribbean Center.
